What manner of thing is this?
This is a ragtag company (are there any other kinds?) of any and all who come together in a chat and voice channel wherein randomly chosen Shakespeare plays are quickly cast and then cold read an hour and a half later.
Anyone is welcome to come listen, and anyone is welcome to participate! The only requirements for reading for a role are having a way to broadcast your voice and being genuinely enthusiastic about doing so. Rather than auditions, casting is done on a first-come-first-serve basis, and anyone can throw their hat in the ring for any role regardless of experience or whether or not it would be considered “proper” casting.
That is to say: if someone's grandmother would very much like to play Romeo, she'd be greeted with genuine excitement and delight.
While the atmosphere is very casual and there's a great deal of laughter and irreverence, gifs and memes and color commentary in the groundling pit (throw vegetables? In this economy?), we all of us to a one love and honor The Bard and try to do our best by his words.
Of course there are no sets, no costumes, no choreography; our duels and clashes of armies are kitchen implements struck together, our trumpet flourishes often buzzed with our lips, but—
Think when we talk of horses, that you see them
Printing their proud hoofs i' the receiving earth;
For 'tis your thoughts that now must deck our kings...
— Henry V
We're here to love Shakespeare and each other; to make new friends, keep the old, and have ourselves a rollicking good time alone-together. Be you welcome, take your ease (and perhaps a chance), and if your curiosity is piqued but yet left so unsatisfied... take a look around!
